Acts 19-20 Proper Authority and Ministering to the people

Acts 19:1-12; 20:7-12

Questions:

1.      What did Paul do for the Corinthian saints because it hadn’t been done right the first time?

Paul re baptized them because they had not received the gift of the Holy Ghost. They had been baptized, but not by someone with the correct authority. 

2.      How does this help answer the question many non-members have about the need of being baptized when they have already been baptized?

This helps answer that question because these people had previously been baptized as well, however it was not done with the proper authority. If it had been then Paul would not have had to step in and do it again. They had not received the gift of the Holy Ghost and proper baptism is to be baptized by fire and water meaning by immersion and the Holy Ghost. Those who ask about being baptized again can see from this scripture that they need to be baptized by the proper authority which is in the name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Then they will receive the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands. 

3.      In what way did Paul bestow the gift of the Holy Ghost?

Paul had bestowed the gift of the Holy Ghost by laying his hands upon them and then the Holy Ghost “came on them” (Acts 19:6) He used his priesthood power to confer that gift upon them. 

4.      On what day of the week did the saints meet to break bread? What evidence is there in John 20:1, 19 for why the Sabbath day was changed?

The saints met on the first day of the week, being Sunday, to break bread. The evidence in these scriptures for the change is the fact that Mary Magdalene went in to see Christ on the “First day” which was Sunday, the Sabbath day and she soon found out that Christ was gone. He had been resurrected. Christ was resurrected on Sunday, the first day of the week and in verse 19 he appears unto his disciples and says to them “peace be unto you.” The Sabbath day was changed to Sunday because Christ was resurrected on that day.
